The common Yellow Jacket at right is very dangerous. It's sense of smell is very powerful. If you try to kill or do kill one of it's members with your shoe, it will follow that scent to find you. Yellow Jackets don't just sting - they BITE. Both are very painful. They will attach themselves to your clothes when upset & bite until they find your skin. They are attracted to color of your garments & will target you - remembering your scent & color. They can also fly faster than you can run.

sub adult Mole Kingsnake image - VA species.© DAJones

This snake is a sub-adult, Mole Kingsnake (Lampropeltis calligaster rhombomaculata).  They prefer to stay underground, hence the name. This snake is not venomous.

This Southern Hog Nosed snake is not a venomous variety but I thought it would show the snakes' mouth well.

Common Black Snake in hole inside of tree. © DAJones  Ribbon snake, very similar to a typical Garter Snake. These guys only eat bugs, worms and fish usually. They only get about 30 inches or so. © DAJones

Left Image: Black Snake or Black Rat Snake; Right Image: Ribbon Snake - very similar to a typical Garter Snake.  These guys only eat bugs, worms and fish usually.  They only get about 30 inches or so. We also have the Black Racer, which will always be solid black in coloring with a silver belly (and the black rat snakes have a white belly) can get up to 6 feet long.

Neither snake here venomous though will strike & leave a nasty bite. We DO NOT KILL Snakes because they eat mice & voles &  other rodents. They are really needed in a rural environment to keep the status quo on an even keel! A long stick or rake will send them in the other direction as they would rather not be near people .Be aware that any snake will make a nest in a mulch pile or in stacked up wood on your property. This nest may contain soft oblong white or cream colored eggs.
