Hanover is known for Tomatoes & Strawberries (Hanover Tomato Festival
in July & Ashland Strawberry Faire - June ). Thirty years ago when I came to this county, almost everyone had a garden. I am well indoctrinated by now growing lots of vegetables and canning or freezing them for my family. Of course, I also took lots of slides of beautiful vegetables! As Agriculture is all around me, I am also able to photograph commercial machinery in action planting, plowing, & harvesting,
spraying for insects/weeds on land with big tired equipment or a
cropduster (an engine sound you will not forget! and aerobatics better than any barnstormer!)
Making Jam & Preserves from Local Produce:
"Hanover Homemades" Jam for Sale
by request:
$5.00 each + Ship. We have a long list of Specialty Jams & Preserves available. I became a Va. Extension Master Gardener Grad in 1985 & also learned the benefits of USDA Food Preservation. Canning & freezing garden produce became "second nature" and was duly appreciated by my family in the fall and winter months.
Hanover Tomatoes are especially well known here and a festival dedicated to the Hanover Tomato occurs every
July. Wild Black Raspberries (Seedless my best seller), & Wild Blackberries "called to me" to make them into Seedless Jam. I soon had many Clients for these Sweet Delights. Varieties have expanded to include: Peach Preserves (peaches, orange, maraschino cherries), Nectarine Preserves ( same as Peach), Pear Honey ( pears & an Orange),
Ambrosia (cantaloupe, peaches, orange, pineapple, lemon juice, maraschino cherries), Peach-Pineapple Preserves,
Tomato Preserves, & Concord Grape with Skins Jam (when I can get to them
before the birds or deer or squirrels do!), and
Wild Black Muscadine Grape Jam with skins.
We will ship all over the USA & Overseas (as allowed by Customs). Blue Ribbons at the VA. State Fair & sales at local shops confirm the goodness of Hanover County Bounty!
Wildlife Protection
Natural wild areas are fast becoming scarce with all the "building improvements" encroaching on our open spaces which were once so abundant here in Virginia. Homeowners can do their part in protecting wildlife by maintaining the Hedgerows along their property & leaving as many trees as possible - this especially includes what we usually call
Cedars which are actually called Junipers. Many creatures depend on Hedgerows to survive throughout the year. My home land area is fortunate to have: Pilated Woodpeckers, Red Tailed Hawks, various Owls, Red Foxes, Red & Grey Squirrels, Chipmunks, Flying Squirrels, Raccoons, Skunks, Opossums, Beavers, Ground Hogs, Box Turtles, Various varieties of Snakes & Lizards, Rabbits & other animals found near water. My STOCK Photography includes most of these species: Inquire.
Hanover VA History / Hanover County VA. Historical Society
When Jamestown was founded and settled and people started moving west, they naturally moved to Hanover County (which was much larger & included New Kent). By 1701, there were enough settlers to build many new Parish Churches. In 1720 Hanover County was separated from New Kent and became legally authorized.
Historic Hanover County Map. In 1729, Slash Church (sometimes called Merrie Oaks) was built and is the only Frame Original Condition church still in use by a congregation to survive in the State of Virginia. Parish churches, authorized by the King of England (Anglican) fell out of favor during the Revolution & by 1785 were sold back to the people (now US Citizens). Patrick Henry & Henry Clay both grew up in this church,
and changed our country's future forever. Many historic places abound here including battle sites during The War Between the States.
2004 is the 300th anniversary for St. Paul's Parish which is now only the
middle section of Hanover County but which originally included Hanover & New
Kent Counties. Slash is the Oldest Surviving Frame Church in Virginia 1729 -
2007 } 278 years!
